All these old automotive innovations really fascinate me. I had a course in my first year of university in which we learned how current car technology came to be. A large part of it was about which intermediate technologies came and went, and what roles they played in changing the dominant technologies. The electric starter, for instance, was introduced to make the petrol powered car more user friendly, like the electric car already was, and in the process taking away one of the electric car’s benefits over the petrol powered car. Some stories also swinged the other way, injection vs carburetor for instance. Our lecturer even wrote a book specifically about these effects.

Another example is all those pre selector gearboxes - and the Cotal electromagnetic ones - from the 1930s which used epicyclic gear sets and friction materials to change gear, an idea which gave rise to the automatic gearboxes that followed them.
